An Important Update!
STOP Press! Stribers Wind Farm Developer Pulls Out
Last month we reported that Energia in Natura, the Italian developer planning the Stribers wind farm, had closed their UK office. Subsequent indications confirm that they have decided not to proceed with their planning application.
The economic downturn apparently prompted Energia to review their position as long ago as last summer. Even now the STOP (Stop Turbines On Peninsula) Action Group has had no response to its direct enquiries to Energia, so perhaps it was predictable that they wouldn’t bother to let us all know at the time of their decision.
It would be nice if STOP supporters could feel this was a champagne moment! However, members of the Action Group remain rather wary. While it does look as if the immediate threat has gone, Energia’s interest could be resurrected in the future. Alternatively, another company might take up the option on the site. After all we know one developer had been working on an application back in 1999 and we strongly suspect that another was showing an interest in 2004.

So active opposition needs now to be replaced by keen vigilance. If you pick up any hint of further interest by a developer, then do let a member of the STOP committee know (contact details on this website).
We originally learnt of Energia’s intentions when they sent letters of notification to nearby residents in May 2008. However, this was not a systematic mailing so, if you ever receive such a letter, please don’t assume other people know. We hope you will inform us as quickly as possible.
The STOP Group is going to continue working actively to protect Stribers from any such future proposal. This will include further postings on this website from time to time, so don’t forget us. If you have registered with us, keep us informed of any change in your contact details, so that we don’t forget you!
Here in and around Cartmel we have a uniquely beautiful heritage landscape on the edge of the Lake District National Park. At least for now we can all continue our local walks without that lurking anxiety that soon it might be disfigured for us and our children for decades to come.
Many thanks to all who have expressed their opposition over the last two years and signed up to support the STOP action group. We can all feel relieved and reassured – if not entirely relaxed.
